Previewing the Model Hardware Standard
Summary
Anthropic and HHMI Janelia unveil the Model Hardware Standard (MHS) as a research preview to standardize AI-driven control of physical lab and manufacturing devices. The standard provides a common driver model, device discovery, and interfaces (MCP, CLI, APIs) so AI agents can orchestrate multi-device workflows safely and autonomously. Early demonstrations across Genentech, University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon, QuEra, and others show substantial time savings and improved fault recovery, though human oversight remains essential in the near term.
