Summary
This retro-tech essay revisits Lotus Improv on the NeXT, exploring its multidimensional data modeling, pivot-table innovations, and how Improv influenced later tools like Quantrix. The article contrasts NeXTSTEP's UI and Improv's unique formula language with modern spreadsheets, using historical context and emulator notes to argue Improv was a powerful demo rather than mass-market tool.
