Summary
A historical overview of Norton Commander and the Orthodox File Manager (OFM) paradigm, tracing NC's origins (1.0, 1986) through NC 5.5 and its impact on file-management UX, including dual-pane interfaces, built-in viewers, and NCD innovations. The piece places NC in the context of its era’s competitors (XTree, Volkov Commander, DN) and discusses the evolution, market dynamics, and eventual decline of the DOS-era OFM lineage, offering insights for understanding legacy tooling and UX patterns that influence modern automation and DevOps file-management concepts.
