Seoul Viosys begins production of rare-earth-free white light emitter

Quality: 9/10 Relevance: 9/10

Summary

Seoul Viosys has mass-produced a rare-earth-free white-light micro-LED (WICOP 3) that emits white light without rare earths, using GaN and no packaging. Initial mass production delivers 0.015 lm from a 25 µm × 10 µm chip with luminous efficacy near 100 lm/W, with a target of 200 lm/W within two years. The technology could unlock new markets by embedding micro-emitters in surfaces such as wallpaper or glass, and Seoul Viosys plans Q4 2026 mass production while pursuing supply-chain partnerships for AR displays and AI data communications.
